Because, they figure out that they can be. It feels powerful to push somebody down by being mean to them. It's easier to feel powerful by being mean than by being nice. But being nice feels pretty good too.

I was told when I was little that they felt insecure and needed to call attention to themselves, but now I know different..They like to be ugly and mean until someone comes along that is a lot meaner..

I've spent my life asking the same question as the kid. In all my years, I've never found an answer.
I belive kids are mean to feel powerful, This is because they probubly were treated meanly by some with power over them teaching them that being powerful is being mean.
My 9 year step-daughter often chooses to be mean instead of nice. Just last night she refused to help her 10 year old step-sister with her hair. Her step- sister has an injury on her hand. My step-daughter said..."Nope...not helping you with your conditioner." This morning, when I asked her why, she said because Tori was begging her for her help.(I was at work at the time)I feel this is a power and control issue and perhaps the child is just a mean person. Is it too late for her?

Glad to see some one is looking at my archive. I thought most folks don't bother with the "old" stuff.
Is it too late? I don't know. What do you think? My hope would be that the answer is no.
I don't think it's ever too late to learn to become a nicer person. It just takes the right motivation. You also have to figure out what's causing the problem.
.I have a stepson that is 10 he calls his dad, faggot, jackass, fat, stupid and other words .I cannot say on here. .He also tells me to go to hell all the time. .I cannot stand it. .I have no choice but to leave. .He is uncontrollable. /Did .I mention that he has to have his dad sleep in bed with him not me. .It just gets worse as he gets older and .I can't even go out with him in the van he gets mad if .I sit in the front and swares at me. /What should .I do.
